About Celtic Shores
Release Date: Late September 2019

As part of this crowdfunding campaign, the Institute of Musical Traditions, has sponsored a Celtic Shores CD release and KA/PO Concert Sat, September 28, 7:30 p.m. at the Seekers Church in Takoma Park! Details at the IMT website.

The calming sound of the ocean waves is the heart and soul of the airs from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Isle of Man (Manx), Brittany in France, and Galicia in Spain – the 7 Celtic nations. Karen Ashbrook, a world-renowned performer of 40+ years on the hammered dulcimer, gently brings this music to life.

With her previous recording "Starry Starry - Celestial Music From The Heart," a fantasia of international lullabies, she raised funds and gave away almost 700 copies of the recording to veterans, their families and the staff at the military hospital where she provides therapeutic music. With Celtic Shores she hopes to raise money to cover the entire project, as well as provide free recordings and extra hours of playing for veterans and their families. Any money raised over the fundraising goal will provide additional music for veterans and their families! Karen does that at the local military hospital she works at, putting out free CDs and cards for free digital downloads when she plays in the lobby of the hospital. The extra hours will find her in different parts of the hospital - from the Psyche Ward to one on one in the hospital rooms to the Post Surgery recovery area ("PACU"- Post Anesthesia Care Unit).

Funders will be invited to a Facebook page for updates, special content, & commenting

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Timeline for the recording?

  • April - I’m having a kick-off Get-Ready-for-the-Studio House Concert/Presentation on Sunday, April 28 in Silver Spring, Maryland. I will present all the music for the recording, describe how I found it and include anecdotes from playing in the hospital.

  • May - Memorial Day Weekend I record at Tonal Park in Takoma Park, Maryland with Charlie Pilzer engineering. He will also be doing the mastering. Charlie has produced, engineered and mastered many of my recording projects, including “Starry Starry- celestial music from the heart.”

  • June - I have to take a break in June for summer camps -
Kentucky Music the last week of June, followed by
Common Ground on the Hill - Week 2, June 30-July 5.

  • July - We will mix and master the recording. Orion Weiss, who has done the fabulous art for my last 3 recordings, will also design the artwork for this CD.

  • August - August will be the month everything comes together for the project.

  • September - Recordings will become available late September.

What is a Therapeutic Musician (TM) and how is that different than a Music Therapist (MT)?

Important distinction! MTs earn a college degree and their course work involves psychology classes and 1200 practicum hours! They are able to lead groups using music as a major therapeutic tool and also design a course of action with patients. They have a wide scope of practice.

TMs have a certification, recognized by the National Standards Board for Therapeutic Musicians. The scope of practice is strictly limited to creating a sonic healing environment with music one on one at the bedside. You learn to play for different patient conditions including acute pain, high blood pressure, memory issues, through actively dying. There are a few different training groups that provide about 80 hours of class instruction and then you have 45 hours of practicum, involving actual bedside playing. I was certified through the Music for Healing and Transitions Program and I am a CMP or Certified Music Practitioner.

I became certified in March, 2013 and started playing at an assisted living facility the same week. I have worked at three hospitals and I’m currently employed three days a week in medical centers. My time is divided between playing for individual patients in their rooms and playing in common areas, including infusion, the NICU (the babies!), Pre and Post Surgery, Dialysis, waiting areas and the Psychiatric Ward.
